Sericulture

Rearing of Livestock plays an important role in the Economy, especially in the rural areas. Apart from agriculture, many rural youth are gaining their livelihood in dairy, rearing sheep, goats and pigs etc. The prosperity of Agriculture depends on the Livestock population. They help the farmers in carrying out agricultural operations and also help in conserving soil health and moisture for healthy crops. Small and marginal farmers and landless poor contributing to 62% of total milk production own 70% of the livestock in the state. Women constitute about 69% of the workforce engaged in the livestock sector. Similarly, rural shepherds own 90% of the sheep population and entire piggery development is the monopoly of weaker sections.

The state has introduced Blue Revolution, White Revolution and Red revolution to improve the production of fish, milk and meat thereby improving livelihoods. The Animal Husbandry sector consists of bovine, ovine, pig and poultry population. Bovine population is further classified into cattle and buffaloes and ovine population into sheep and goat.
